The era we were taught to call “Dark” was the era of Hagia Sophia, the Alhambra, Angkor Wat, Notre-Dame, and Chartres. Medieval architecture pushed engineering to the edge in service of the divine — domes that should not have stood, vaults that defied gravity, light treated as the substance of God.
